The term "top 1%" has been around for over a hundred years, according to Britannica.com. It has became a more prominent part of America's conversation since 2011 with the Occupy Wall Street movement. Growing up in Montana, it wasn't a term I was familiar with until I was much older, but these days you hear it more and more, even here. The definition of the top 1% is the people that are among the "top 1% wealthiest Americans, as measured by either annual income or net worth". According to Smart Asset.

So how much money does a person in Montana need to earn in order to be considered to be a part of the top 1%? Go Banking Rates has some answers. Where you live has a lot to do with how much income you need in order to be in the top 1%. The amount of money you need to make in California is much different than what it takes in Montana.

Montana's Ranking For the Top 1%

Go Banking Rates found that you have to have an income over $1,000,000 in five states, to be considered in the top 1%,  Connecticut, Massachusetts, California, Washington, and New Jersey. Montana ranks number 19 on the list. In order to be considered in the top 1% in Montana you need to make $741,182 in annual income.

In Wyoming you need to make $872,896 annually to be in the top 1%, they rank in the top 10 at number 9. West Virginia is the state that has the lowest annual income to be included on the list with an annual income of $435,302.
