Montanans Ask: Where Is the 250th Anniversary License Plate?
As the United States Semiquincentennial approaches, communities across the country are preparing to celebrate 250 years since the Declaration of Independence was signed. Events, tributes, and patriotic displays are expected nationwide, but here in Montana, one nostalgic tradition may be missing.
A Milestone Celebration Across America
Many Montanans still remember the excitement of the United States Bicentennial in 1976. It was a year filled with parades, fireworks, and patriotic pride. One of the most memorable keepsakes from that celebration was Montana’s special edition license plate, featuring red, white, and blue colors and a distinctive bison skull. Our family car had those plates on it for a long time after 1976.

Still, the idea has sparked interest. A throwback-style plate inspired by the 1976 design could tap into both nostalgia and state pride, giving Montanans a unique way to celebrate America’s 250th birthday.
For now, it remains a “what if.” But as the Semiquincentennial draws closer, many are wondering if Montana will seize the opportunity to revive a small but meaningful piece of history.
