The Missoula County Sheriff’s Office has officially moved into its new headquarters at 2415 Mullan Road, directly across from the Missoula County Detention Center. Sheriff Jeremiah Petersen said the relocation improves coordination between deputies and detention staff and also provides more accessible parking compared to the previous courthouse offices, which often faced congestion and limited space for both employees and visitors.

The move follows a $2 million purchase of the Mullan Road property, approved by county commissioners in July 2024. The project was funded through the American Rescue Plan Act and was designed to relocate about 40 staff members from the courthouse to the new site. Civil process services will remain downtown at the courthouse.

Why the Sheriff’s Office Relocated

The new location houses the sheriff’s administrative and patrol operations, creating closer proximity to the detention facility for daily work. The transition into the building was completed this summer, with the office now fully operating out of the new headquarters.

Earlier this year, the sheriff’s office also completed a round of hiring to help fill staffing needs. Officials said the added personnel, combined with the move, are part of ongoing efforts to improve efficiency and meet the demands of law enforcement in Missoula County, particularly as the region continues to grow and calls for service increase.

How the Move Impacts the Community

Community members seeking sheriff’s office services are now being directed to the new Mullan Road building, while courthouse offices continue to provide civil process assistance. The relocation marks the first major headquarters move for the sheriff’s office in decades, signaling a new chapter in how the department serves the community.
