Montana’s long-range forecasts for this winter are coming in fast. We have seen forecasts from the National Weather Service and from the Farmer’s Almanac as to what we can expect to see this winter.

The initial forecasts are calling for above-normal precipitation in Montana this winter, which may be some good news for skiers and for some of the drought conditions we have been experiencing in Montana the past few years.   

Now we can add in the Old Farmer’s Almanac’s winter forecast for Montana into the mix.  

Old Farmer’s Almanac Forecast for Montana

For the fall forecast, the Old Farmer’s Almanac is predicting warmer than normal temperatures and above-normal precipitation for our region. It looks like the winter forecast is similar to their fall forecast.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac splits Montana into two regions. Western Montana is in the Intermountain region while central and eastern Montana are in the High Plains region.  

Overall, both regions are forecast for mild temperatures this winter. The amount of precipitation is where the two parts of the state are going to vary. 

The High Plains forecast is calling for above-normal temperatures with below-normal precipitation. The coldest times of the year are expected to be mid-December, late January, and early February.

The Intermountain forecast is calling for above-normal temperatures with slightly above-normal precipitation in the southern part of the region and slightly below-normal precipitation in the north. We can expect to see the coldest temperatures of the winter in late November, early December, and early February.

Comparing Forecast Sources for Montana’s Winter

We have seen forecasts this year with a little bit of everything from major snow to now above-normal temperatures. As always with Montana weather we will need to be patient and see what our winter has in store for us. In the meantime, we have time to prepare for whatever Mother Nature decides to throw at us.
