Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial kick off to "Summer Travel Season". According to AAA, not only will Americans be taking to the highways, but we may see record numbers of travelers, that would include on Montana's roads. The prediction is more than 42 million Americans will be traveling from Thursday May 25th through Monday May 29th.

Montana Law Enforcement Patrols Have Already Increased

When I have been traveling by car around Montana for the past two months, I haven't seen a large law enforcement presence. This last weekend I saw more highway patrol, sheriff's deputies, police officers, and people being pulled over, than I have seen recently. I have also seen more cars on the roads as the travel season starts to pick up.

Montana Road Construction is in Full Swing

With all the traveling expected this weekend, this may be a good time to remind you to be aware of road construction that has increased on our roads and highways. I have encountered some situations that may have some potential for danger. There was a construction site with a lane that merged very close to an on-ramp for the highway. This made it difficult when vehicles trying to merge onto the highway were not yielding to the traffic already on the highway.

Montana is One of the Worst States for Drivers

Montana drivers rank as some of the worst in the country. That study also ranks Montana as the worst state per-capita for drinking and driving. Please don't drink and drive this weekend, please designate a sober driver. Montana is also a "click it or ticket state", it is against the law to drive without your seatbelt buckled. Be safe on the Montana roads this weekend and all summer long.
