Montana’s ‘Brawl of the Wild’ Rivalry Heats Up with Red Cross Blood Battle
The “Brawl of the Wild” football game between the University of Montana Grizzlies and the Montana State Bobcats started in 1897. It’s one of the most storied rivalries in sports and in a state that doesn’t have a professional football team it’s kind of a big deal.
Over the years, people have found ways to use this rivalry to help people in Montana in more ways than one. Bragging rights are a big motivator to help people out.
A Rivalry That Gives Back
The Montana Red Cross “Blood Battle” is currently underway and running through this Friday. It’s a way fans can roll up their sleeves, donate blood, and show their school spirit. You may not be aware of this, but this event is in its third decade. It’s become a fall tradition for a lot of people.

When people ask what they can do to help their community, donating blood can literally save lives, and it only takes about an hour. If you want to speed up the process, you can download the free Red Cross app. You can schedule an appointment and fill out the required questionnaires online.
Griz Blood Drive Dates and Locations
I spoke with Keeley Van Middendorp from the Red Cross about the event. Griz fans can donate blood on the University of Montana Campus:
- Nov. 12 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., James E. Todd Center, 32
- Nov. 13 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., James E. Todd Center, 32
- Nov. 14 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., School of Pharmacy
Van Middendorp informed me that Montana State University has won the “Blood Battle” the last three years in a row. It’s time for Griz fans to step up and beat the Cats this year.
If you are squeamish and would prefer a different way to show your support, the annual “Can the Cats” food drive is underway too. Whichever way you choose to support your school, you’re making a difference in your community — and that’s what matters most.
