Montana Ranks Low On One of the ‘Weirdest Lists’ We’ve Seen
When growing up, there always seems to be that one friend who is just a little different. I had a friend who people would dare to eat bugs. He would eat them if they paid him. He actually made some pretty good money for a kid.
Eating bugs is nothing new. I have had a scorpion lollipop, and have eaten cheddar cheese flavored crickets that I got at Missoula's Rockin' Rudy's. They are a novelty treat. For a lot of people around the planet, eating insects isn't a novelty, it's part of their diet. If you were interest in starting to incorporate edible insects into your diet, Montana isn't the best place for that to happen.
Montana Ranks Low for Edible Insects
According to Lawn Starter, Montana isn't a good place for eating edible insects. This is one of the stranger lists I have seen recently. Montana ranks number 48 out of the 50 states, and the District of Columbia, for trying edible insects.
It makes sense, I don't recall seeing insects on menus in Montana. According to the American Heart Association there are around 2 billion people who integrate insects in their diet. Some are high in fiber, protein, essential amino acids, antioxidants, B-12, iron, zinc, and more. There is also a trend developing for insect farms.
The most popular edible insects are beetles. Some people eat wasps. I have wasp allergies, so that one makes me a bit uncomfortable. But there are some products that I would be willing to try. There is a cricket powder on the market that can be used in baked goods, like brownies, that I would be willing to taste.
Because I know you are wondering, here are the top states for edible insects:
- California
- New York
- North Carolina
- Minnesota
- Florida
I have a feeling it will be some time before we see insects as common menu items in Montana. Until that happens, if you are craving an edible insect, you may have to just enjoy the novelty crickets that you can pick up in stores around the state.
