Chances are, if you have taken a flight in the last six months out of Missoula, you have seen the remodeled facility and added gates.

First Impressions: New Gates, Same Chaos

Having recently traveled through Missoula International Airport, I have to say I was impressed with the updates. Granted the gate we flew out of was still under construction and we heard the grinding of metal on metal while we were awaiting boarding, the facilities look modern and should add ease of access for travelers.

I do hope they add more affordable eateries and local artisan shops, as there was only one option for food, which was the Kettlehouse Bar & Grill. It would be nice to see more variety and affordability when it comes to amenities.

Construction kicked off back in late 2018, with Phase 1 opening in June 2022. Phase 2 is now underway. Their slogan to ease travelers “Please Bear with Us” plays on the Missoula Grizzlies mascot as they work to bring you a modern and intuitive airport experience.

Heads Up: September Closure

If you are traveling this fall, do note that the Missoula Airport website states that the airport will be closed at 8am, Tuesday September 2, 2025, until 3pm on Sunday September 7, 2025 for runway resurfacing.

Although it does not match the eclectic aesthetic of Portland airport or the comfort of Chicago O’Hare, the changes are for the better in my mind and put Missoula on the map as a premiere destination.

Pro travel tip: If you are packing for your next trip, put a lock on your suitcase, pack light, and bring your own snacks. You don’t want to be hangry in an airport and forced to pay $19 for 2 ounces of trail mix

Editor's Note: The retail pricing at MSO for Yogurt Trail Mix is $4.99 for 4oz and $3.49 for 5.5oz of a different brand.
