There are some pretty exciting changes happening at Missoula’s Roxy Theater, and if you're a regular moviegoer, you're going to notice them.

The Roxy is getting a new roof, new screens, and a completely upgraded sound system.

Essential Roof Replacement Due to Weather Damage

Replacing the roof became a necessity after about 30 years of dealing with Montana weather. After several weeks of rain in June, staff noticed some minor damage inside the theaters, including peeling paint. An inspection confirmed the roof was simply ready to be replaced. The goal is to get that work completed before the snow flies.

Then comes the really fun stuff.

New Screens: Enhancing Your Movie Experience

The Roxy is getting new screens in Theaters Two and Three. Theater One already received a new screen in March when it got a new projector, meaning all three theaters will now have new screens in the main building. The upgrades were made possible in part through a Missoula Gives campaign, which reached its fundraising goal.

The Roxy is also getting a new sound system in all three theaters in the main building.

Because the speakers are located behind the movie screens, the Roxy decided to tackle the screen and sound projects together. Sarah Ferguson with the Roxy says upgrading the sound has actually been something of a dream, and the goal is to give moviegoers a more immersive experience and present films the way they were intended to be heard.

Think about what makes going to the movies special. The giant screen, the popcorn and, of course, the sound.

Now the Roxy is getting all three upgraded.

Community Impact: How Missoula Gives Makes a Difference

This is also a great example of where Missoula Gives dollars actually make a difference.

Sarah says the Roxy may have been able to move forward with the sound upgrade, but without the Missoula Gives campaign, they might have had to put the old screens back up after the sound work. Instead, the community helped make new screens for all three theaters possible.

There will be some temporary disruption while the work is happening. The theaters are being worked on one at a time, but the screen and sound upgrades are expected to be finished by the end of this week.

The roof will cause the biggest scheduling impact, with Friday and Monday matinees temporarily canceled for a couple of weeks because of the construction noise. Evening screenings and weekend matinees are expected to continue.
