Montana Should See a Thrilling Meteor Shower This Weekend
Montana is known as the "Big Sky State" and proves it all the time. When you get a chance to look up in the sky on a dark night in Montana it can be breathtaking. We've had some amazing views this year of the Northern Lights, you can see some pictures below. If the weather and smoke hold we should get a great view of the next celestial event.
Perseid Meteor Shower will Peak This Weekend
The peak of the Perseid meteor shower is happening this weekend. The best viewing times should be Sunday night into Monday morning according to Space.com. The good news is that there should be almost no moon, keeping the sky nice and dark for viewing.
There Should Be Some Great Viewing in Montana
The bad news, for us in Montana, is that the very peak of the meteor shower will be taking place about 8 am, when it will be light out in the Northern Hemisphere. But, there still should be some great viewing either this Saturday or Monday night in Montana. Depending on where you are and what the sky conditions will be like.
One of the wilder space stories that I have been following was when the astronauts from the International Space Station had one of their tool bags become untethered and it was floating in space. You weren't able to see it with a naked eye, but a pair of binoculars were enough to watch it orbit the planet. It was projected to fall out of orbit this summer and burn up in the atmosphere on its return trip to Earth. Nasa has announced that they are going to stop manning the International Space Station by 2030. For the time being, you can track the space station in the sky on the website Spot the Station. Keep your eyes to the skies this weekend, you just may see a couple shooting stars.
