Montana Drivers See Fewer Speeding Tickets in the Treasure State
Raise your hand if you remember when Montana didn't have a posted speed limit. For a short time when driving on Montana's highways you were expected to be "reasonable and prudent" when it came to driving speeds. It looks like Montana continues the tradition of being "reasonable and prudent" at least compared to our neighbors.
Montana's Neighbors Get Speeding Tickets
Insurify has put together a list of the top states with the most speeding tickets, and surprisingly, Montana didn't make the list. All of our neighboring states made the list. The number one state with the most speeding tickets is North Dakota. Here are the rankings for Montana's neighboring states.
- 1. North Dakota 8.7% of drivers with a speeding ticket on their record.
- 5. Idaho 7.1% of drivers with a speeding ticket on their record.
- 6. Wyoming 6.8% of drivers with a speeding ticket on their record.
- 7. South Dakota 6.7% of drivers with a speeding ticket on their record.
When it comes to driving, Montana is ranked as one of the worst states for teen drivers and is one of the worst states for driving overall. Montana is still one of only two states that does not have distracted driving laws on the books.

According to a Forbes report Montana ranks 5th highest for the number of fatal car accidents "involving a driver who was driving too fast for conditions, speeding or racing". You would think that would put Montana on the list of the states with the most speeding tickets. Maybe we do speed as much as the other top states, maybe we just don't get caught as much as other drivers.
Nevertheless, please be safe on Montana's roads.
