This time last year, Montana was in the middle of a record cold snap. Most of the state saw below zero temperatures with record lows in many parts of the state. The cold blast lasted over a week.

According to the National Weather Service, record low temperatures were broken. Roundup saw -44 and Billings NWS saw -31, both of those temperatures were record lows.

I spoke with Trent Smith, from the National Weather Service, about what we can expect for the rest of the winter forecast.

We also talked about the major cold blast we had last year. He mentioned we are looking for our first cold blast of 2025 coming into the area this weekend. Right now the forecast doesn't call for the type of cold we saw last year at this time, but we may see lows dip below zero in some parts of the state.

Possibility of Below Zero Temps This Weekend

According to Weather.com, Western Montana is looking at high temperatures for this Saturday and Sunday in the upper teens with overnight lows zero to just below zero. The good news is that this cold spell isn't going to last nearly as long as last year's at this same time.

High temperatures should be back into the twenties, with overnight lows in the teens by Tuesday, January 21.

The National Weather Service currently has the high temperature for Saturday near 21°F, and the overnight low Saturday Night at 3°F.
