The Jeannette Rankin Peace Center has announced the recipient of the 2024 Peacemaker of the Year Award, an award that honors "a remarkable individual who exemplifies the values of non-violence, social justice, and environmental sustainability."

This year's honoree is Representative Zooey Zephyr.

Zephyr's influence in Montana made international news when she was disciplined during the 2023 legislative session. In the months following the session, Zephyr became a role model for human rights. In September, she was named a 2023 Time100 Next recipient. The incident at the legislative session was also the subject of a short documentary that recently won an award at the 2024 Big Sky Documentary Film Festival.

In a Jeannette Rankin Peace Center press release, Executive Director Nicole Mitchell said, "Zooey is an example of hope and inspiration, highlighting the profound impact on creating a more peaceful and just world."

The Peacemaker award was last given in 2021 to KD Dickinson, of Portico Real Estate, a company dedicated to diversity, building community, and creating "a lifestyle that promotes the health and well-being of our planet." Other Peacemakers of the last 10 years include Fernanda Menna Barreto Krum & Robert Rivers, Steve McArthur, Mary Poole, Patrick Weasel Head, Kathy and Glenn "Woody" Wood, and Claudia Brown.

Zooey Zephyr will be presented with a quilt from the Missoula Peace Quilters to honor her for her contributions.
