Health and Change: Red Dye No.3 to Disappear from Montana Foods
Growing up in the '70s and the '80s, and basically in a single-parent household, I ate a lot of stuff that wasn't very healthy. As I get older I try to eat better, but let's face it, I don't always do a good job, but at least I try.
There are foods that we will no longer see on Montana shelves in the future, some of them are being discontinued by the manufacturer.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration will no longer allow the use of "FD&C Red No. 3", also known as Red Dye No. 3 and erythrosine as an additive in food and ingested drugs. On January 15, 2025, the FDA issued an order to not allow food or prescription manufacturers to use it in their food or prescription medications anymore.

Manufacturers have until January 15, 2027 or January 18, 2028, respectively to "reformulate their products" and stop the use of this food additive.
Some manufacturers have already stopped using Red Dye No. 3, and have switched to "FD&C Red 40", according to the Associated Press.
Most of the foods that continue to use this additive aren't part of my diet, as I said I am trying. There are so many manufactured foods that I used to eat growing up that I don't see in my local grocery store anymore. Who remembers the Space Food Sticks from Pillsbury from back in the day?
The FDA made it clear in their order that "there is no evidence showing FD&C Red No. 3 causes cancer in humans."
Below are some of the foods that still use Red Dye No.3. If you have questions about which brands or foods still use the additive it should be listed on the ingredient label.
