Occasionally, I have to remind myself just how lucky we are to live in Montana.

Sometimes all it takes is a quick drive 10, 15, or 20 minutes outside of town to be reminded of how incredible this state really is. Whether it's a mountain trail, a quiet river, a scenic overlook, or simply a walk through the woods, Montana offers opportunities to reconnect with nature that many people across the country can only dream about.

According to a new study from SmileHub, Montana is the No. 1 state in America for outdoor enthusiasts, based on 18 metrics. Montana ranked higher than both Alaska and Hawaii.

The rankings looked at a variety of factors related to outdoor recreation and access to nature, including hiking opportunities, public lands, camping options, wildlife viewing, and overall outdoor accessibility. When all the numbers were added up, Montana finished at the top of the list.

The Allure of Montana’s Natural Wonders

For anyone who has spent time exploring places like Glacier National Park, Yellowstone National Park, the vast wilderness areas of western Montana, or the countless rivers, lakes, and trails scattered across the state, the ranking probably comes as no surprise.

What is surprising is how easy it can be to take it all for granted.

We live surrounded by world-class scenery and recreation opportunities that people travel thousands of miles to experience. Yet many of us drive past them every day without stopping to appreciate them.
