There is an old joke that we get to enjoy all four seasons in Montana, sometimes all in the same day.

Being able to enjoy the four seasons in Montana is one of the reasons why I love living here. With the official start of spring, we can look forward to another changing of our Montana landscape.

Montana will gain over 100 minutes of daylight in the month of March. That means more people will be out and enjoying all that Montana has to offer.

When it does come to spring in Montana, there are some things that we can always count on.

1. The Weather: Spring weather in Montana can be very unpredictable. We can have 100-degree swings in the weather in a matter of days. One day the sun can be shining and the next we can have winter storm warnings and up to a foot of snow fall in the mountains. It is best to be prepared for those situations, especially if you are going to be out in the elements.

2. Wildlife Activity- This is the time of the year when bears wake up from their long winter's nap, be bear aware. As our population continues to grow, the interactions between bears and humans will only increase.  It is also a time when baby animals are born. There have been multiple baby deer born in my yard over the years, and I have always been told to just leave them alone.

3. Mud- If you have a dog and if you go outside at all, you will find mud. Whether you are in the mountains, hills or just going for a walk. Mud will find its way into your car, and eventually your home.

4. Wildflowers- Montana can be a wildflower lovers' dream. There are couple flowers that bloom early in Montana. According to Earthwithin.com, keep your eyes open for the Prairie Crocus or the Glacier Lily: they are some of the earliest bloomers in the spring.

5. Pollinators- When the wildflowers come out, so do the pollinators. Pollinators are incredibly important to Montana's environment. Bats, bees, and butterflies help make sure our state's plants continue to thrive. One of the first butterflies of the season to look out for is Montana's official state butterfly, the Mourning Cloak according to the Montana Natural History Center.
