There is a very good chance that Montana’s skies will light up with a display of the Northern Lights tonight and tomorrow night.

Spaceweather.gov has issued a G4 watch through Wednesday, November 12. This means that not only is there a chance that Montana will have a view of the Northern Lights, but the event may be strong enough to affect technology when it hits the Earth. If this storm holds, the Northern Lights could be seen as far south as Alabama.

There has been a coronal mass ejection (CME) from the Sun, and it’s heading towards Earth. When it arrives on Earth, it can cause a geomagnetic storm. According to Space.com it is the strongest solar flare of the year and can cause radio blackouts across both Europe and Africa.

When and Where to Watch the Aurora in Montana

Meanwhile, the North Taurid meteor shower is happening and will be peaking while we may get a spectacular display of the Northern Lights.

As with most celestial events in Montana, a lot of the viewing depends on the weather and cloud cover. By the end of the week, we may see more clouds coming in, but for the next few days, we may have a good view.

Tips for Photographing the Northern Lights

The best way to view events like this is to find a dark place and let your eyes adjust to the dark. Sometimes it’s difficult to see the Northern Lights with your naked eye. But when you take a picture with your phone, you can see images in the sky your eyes don’t pick up.

If the storm is as big as forecast, I am sure there are going to be a lot of pics of the Northern Lights coming to social media channels in the next few days.
