For me, keeping an on the mail has become more important part of my life. I have written about it before, but I have been a victim of mail theft from my home mail box in the past. Since that happened to me and my family, I have been very aware of my mail. I have also stopped putting any checks in my mailbox for outgoing mail. With mail theft, and crime continuing, the blue mailboxes aren't as safe of a place as they once may have been. According to MassLive.com, the weekends and holidays, when the postal carriers aren't collecting the mail, can be a prime target for theft. Criminals know the mail won't be picked up that day, or until the holidays are over and that could be a prime opportunity for theft.

Tips For Mail Security in Montana

If you have an important letter to mail, you should go into the post office to mail it. They have slots for mail drop off in the secure building. The United Postal Inspection Service offers tips on how to keep your mail safe:

  • Promptly pick up your mail.
  • Don't send cash in the mail.
  • If you are expecting an important piece of mail and it doesn't arrive, contact the sender.
  • When shipping packages you can use the "Hold For Pickup" option. That person can then pick up the package at their local post office.
