Criminals know the mail won't be picked up that day, or until the holidays are over and that could be a prime opportunity for theft.

If you have an important letter to mail, you should go into the post office to mail it. They have slots for mail drop off in the secure building. The United Postal Inspection Service offers tips on how to keep your mail safe:

Promptly pick up your mail.
Don't send cash in the mail.
If you are expecting an important piece of mail and it doesn't arrive, contact the sender.
When shipping packages you can use the "Hold For Pickup" option. That person can then pick up the package at their local post office.
