This Easy Waterfall Hike in Montana Is Gorgeous [PHOTOS]

Montana may be known for its National Parks, public land, camping, hunting, and impressive mountain ranges, but it also has a fair number of waterfalls that impress and delight. Yellowstone has approximately 290 waterfalls in the park, but you can find plenty of waterfalls in Montana without having to have a park pass.

One of the more popular waterfalls in western Montana is on Skalkaho Pass and can be seen from your car, but if you want an easy hike to a local waterfall, head north instead.

The View

Part of the appeal of this particular hike is that the trail starts along a lake, but not just any lake, Holland Lake, and the waterfall is known as Holland Falls. That means you'll have a beautiful view of the water for the first half of the hike. As you near the waterfall, you'll start to see expansive views of the lake as well as the Mission Mountains in the distance.

The Flora and Fauna

Along the way, you might see ducks or cormorants in the lake, and on the trail, you'll find squirrels and the occasional garter snake. But there are also some beautiful plants, like these orange honeysuckles.

The Trail Isn't Too Long or Too Steep

It's roughly three miles out and back and for most of the trail, it's relatively flat. When you get closer to the waterfall, it gets steeper and there are some rocks, but there's a major pay-off when you arrive.

You will be right next to Holland Falls. You can even feel the water spray down on your face if you want to scramble up a few rocks at the end of the trail.
