It's Illegal In Montana To Put These Decorations on Your Car

People find all kinds of different ways to spread Christmas cheer. Whether it is playing Christmas music, decorating your house, or even decorating your car, people find ways to embrace the holiday spirit. When decorating your house in Montana, keep in mind there are now some laws about what decorations you can, and can't have on your home.

That goes for your vehicle, too. There are decorations that you can and can't legally have on your rig. Always ensure decorations don’t obstruct the driver’s view for safety, but there are no laws against decorations like reindeer antlers in side windows. There aren't laws regarding the big Rudolph red noses that you see around on vehicles this time of year.

There are laws regarding putting Christmas lights on your vehicles in Montana. This is not allowed. According to Find Law, Montana's laws prohibit the use of:

Flashing, blinking, sequential, rotating, or pulsating lights are prohibited except on vehicles that are authorized by this chapter to contain the lights or on a vehicle as a means for indicating a right or left turn or the presence of a vehicular traffic hazard requiring unusual care in approaching, overtaking, or passing.

Flashing lights are strictly prohibited on vehicles. When my kids were little, my son had tennis shoes that lit up when he stomped his feet. We were driving home late one night, and the shoes lit up. I freaked out and thought I was being pulled over. It was just his shoes.

You probably won’t get a ticket or into trouble if you decorate your vehicle with lights for a parade, but outside of that, it’s against Montana law. Be safe on the roads, and have Happy Holidays.
