Skip the Spray: Grow These Herbs to Repel Wasps in Montana
When I was younger I didn't have any problems shooing away a bee, yellow-jacket or a wasp. I was also fearless around bees. Over the years, things changed for me. I don't have any problems with bees, but a wasp can cause some serious issues for me.
There have been a couple of instances with run-ins with wasps. Once while trimming a lilac bush in my yard I managed to disrupt a wasp nest and get stung right between the eyes. My face swelled up and I felt like I was a Klingon from Star Trek.
Years later while mowing the lawn I ran over an underground wasp nest and was stung multiple times. That incident was no laughing matter because I had an allergic reaction and found myself in the emergency room. After years of shots from an allergy doctor, the odds of me dying from being stung are slim but not zero.

Needless to say I try to be aware of wasp nests around my house this time of year. According to Montana State University, this is the season for wasps, hornets, and yellow-jackets in Montana.
There are sprays and traps available at your local hardware store for dealing with them, but for those that are looking for a more natural way to help control them, there are a variety of plants that can help.

According to Gardenia.net you can plant some of these in Montana to help keep your space free from the pests. Not all the plants will last through harsh Montana winters, but they can survive in Montana.
- Marigolds
- Citronella
- Lavender
- Sage
Starting your own herb garden by planting basil, rosemary and thyme can also help repel the insects.
Enjoy your time outdoors in Montana and hopefully you won't have to be like me and carry an EpiPen with you when you enjoy the outdoors.
