The warmest temperatures of the year so far are forecast for this weekend. According to the National Weather Service we could see temperatures climb into the 90s by this weekend.

When temperatures get that hot, one popular activity that people look forward to is to float the rivers, or spend time on their banks. This time of year the rivers are still running high, fast, and cold.

There have been reports of fatalities already this season on Montana's rivers and this weekend, with high temperatures, we may see a lot of activity on the rivers so you need to be aware of the conditions.

Not only are the rivers running high but they are carrying a lot of debris, which can be very dangerous for people and pets.

Clark Fork River Warning

One stretch of a Montana river is very dangerous at this time. The Clinton Rural Fire District is warning floaters about some dangerous debris that has been located between Clinton and Turah on the Clark Fork River. At the former train trestle location, there has been a log blocking the left channel of the river for years. There is now a log that has lodged itself in the center channel.

For those that are used to using the center channel to navigate the river, this new development can pose a danger for those on the river.

For rafters, boaters, or floaters who are looking to hit the rivers this weekend, Claire Seibold from Missoula Search and Rescue offers these safety tips.

  1. Use the buddy system and let people know where you are going, and when you are expected to return.
  2. Make sure you have personal flotation devices for both you and your pet.
  3. Scope out the area where you are planning to float. Conditions on the rivers are changing daily.
  4. Keep an eye on the weather forecast and make sure you have proper clothing.

We know hot temperatures can make spending time on the rivers tempting; if you do plan on floating please make sure safety is your number one priority.
