Montanans are getting older. The median age in Montana, according to Census Reporter is 40.6 years old. That is an older median age than our neighbors and is the oldest state in the west.

For a lot of Montanans, retirement may be on the horizon. When the time comes there are a lot of decisions to be made, one of the big ones is where to retire. Montana has two places that have made a list of the best places to retire. You may find them surprising.

Normally when we talk about some of Montana's cities being "the best" in anything, there are a few places that continually make these lists. It's common to see Billings, Missoula, and Bozeman making these lists. This time around none of them are on the list.

Travel + Leisure has created a list of "The 50 Best Places to Retire in the U.S. in 2025" and Montana is represented with two cities on the list that may be surprising to some.

With a list this long, they have split it up into regions, each with their own top ten list. In the West region the second best place to retire is the Butte-Silver Bow area. The report lists affordable housing, with a "median home price of $209,700", and tax breaks available to residents. They also offer the Montana Folk Festival and stunning views of the Rocky Mountains.

Another town that made the list, coming in at number six in the West, is Great Falls. With a median home value in Cascade County of $243,300 and 12 hospitals and 185 medical facilities in the county, it is an attractive retirement location. Also home to the Montana State Fair and an international airport for convenient travel help make this an attractive retirement destination.

With Butte and Great Falls being ranked as some of the best places in the country to retire, don't be surprised if we see more retirement aged people moving here in the near future.
