Powerful Solar Storm May Bring Stunning Northern Lights to Montana
There is a very good chance that most of Montana will be seeing some amazing Northern Lights over the next 24 to 48 hours.
The Sun has erupted with a powerful X-class flare with a big coronal mass ejection (CME) heading toward the Earth, which could produce some amazing Northern Lights, according to Space.com. Our view of the lights may be similar to what we saw last year.
According to NOAA the Northern Lights forecast is strong for tonight too.
What’s Causing This Solar Storm?
Most people in Montana should be able to see the lights overhead tonight, without having to use their phone cameras to see them. There are reports that this event may be so significant that the Northern Lights could be visible as far south as Northern California and Alabama.
How Far South Could the Aurora Be Visible?
This event could generate a G3 (strong) or G4 (severe) geomagnetic storm. If you think the weather on Earth is difficult to predict, imagine forecasting weather from space. Numerous agencies are tracking this event and trying to narrow down exactly when we can expect the storm to hit Earth. Initial reports are saying tonight and tomorrow night are the best chances.
