Montana’s Department of Health and Human Services has confirmed two cases of measles in Gallatin County.

According to Jon Ebelt, DPHHS Communications Director, the new cases may have exposed the public to measles in multiple locations in Gallatin and Missoula counties. One case was confirmed on November 28, and one on December 1.

Where Measles Exposure May Have Occurred

“Measles is a highly contagious, airborne disease that typically begins with fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes, and a red rash that appears about 14 days after exposure," Ebelt said. "The rash usually starts on the face and spreads downward to the rest of the body.”

Measles Symptoms to Watch For

Ebelt added that it is particularly dangerous for infants for whom vaccination is generally not recommended until 12 months of age.

According to the Missoula County Public Health website, the person infected with measles who visited Missoula spent time at TJ Maxx, Scheels, and Old Chicago on November 22. People with possible exposure in Missoula are encouraged to monitor their symptoms through December 14, 2025.

The Healthy Gallatin website has a list of exposure dates and locations starting on 11/12/2025 at WinCo Foods, with the latest being 11/28/2025 at the Local American Saloon in Belgrade from 5 p.m. - 10 p.m.

“If you believe you have been exposed to measles, but you are not immune to the disease, contact your local health department or health care provider for advice,” said DPHHS Medical Director Dr. Douglas Harrington. “If you have symptoms of disease, call your health care provider to arrange a medical appointment that minimizes exposure to other individuals. The virus is very easily transmitted, and we want to minimize exposure to other people in waiting rooms.”
