Montana continues to be an attractive location for people to buy homes, and from what we have seen there is one area that will continue to see home prices skyrocket in 2026, and that’s Bozeman.

When looking for a home, there are factors that help narrow down what homebuyers want for their new home, like how many bedrooms and bathrooms the prospective house may have.

Zillow has compiled the most searched terms by state for what people are looking for when searching for a home.

It may not come as a surprise that most of the homes searched for in Montana have to do with what Montana is known for. Before we get to Montana, let’s look at what terms people are searching for in our neighboring states.

What Homebuyers Are Searching for by State

In Idaho, the most searched term is ADU. For those that don’t know, ADU stands for an Accessory Dwelling Unit, which is a secondary, smaller living space on the property. People searching for homes in Wyoming are using the word horses the most in their searches. People looking for homes in South Dakota are typically seeking ranches, while those in North Dakota are often searching for cabins.

The Most Popular Home Search Term in Montana

The most popular term used in Montana is “river”. Riverfront homes in Montana aren’t easy to come by, and they aren’t cheap.

Other terms used by people looking for Montana homes are “acreage”, “ranch”, and one term I have never heard before, “barndominium”. I had to look it up. According to Google, it’s “a hybrid structure, blending barn aesthetics with modern home comforts.”

Some words I didn’t see being used for any state are “affordable”, or “inexpensive”.
