It's often assumed that Montana is the whitest or one of the whitest states. It certainly lacks racial and ethnic diversity, but it may not be as white as you think.

Montana Isn't the Whitest State

Data from worldpopulationreview.com shows how white Montana's population is:

  • Montana ranks 13th among America's Whitest states.
  • 85.17% of Montana's population is white.
  • The whitest state is West Virginia with 97.12% of the population identifying as white alone or in combination with other races.

Statewide, 4.2% of the population is Hispanic.

Missoula Is One of the Least Diverse Cities

In April, KGVO reported on a study from Wallet Hub that said Missoula is one of the least diverse cities in the United States. At the time Chief Analyst Jill Gonzalez said that compared to 500 of the largest cities, Missoula ranked 479th. "I think it's one thing to be more diverse for your area or your state, but putting that in the domestic context of other states and other cities, I think it's very eye-opening," she said in an interview with Peter Christian.

A New Study Ranks Missoula in the Top 50

Despite ranking low in overall diversity, a new study from Wallet Hub indicates that out of 182 cities, Missoula ranks 42nd as one of the best cities for Hispanic entrepreneurs. In particular, Missoula ranked in the top 25 (22nd overall) for "Hispanic business friendliness." It ranked lower, at 108th overall for "Hispanic purchasing power."
