The Rise of Text Messaging Scams

Texting has become one of the most common ways we communicate. From confirming appointments to getting quick updates, most of us receive multiple messages throughout the day.

What the Montana Text Scam Looks Like

Texting has become one of the most common ways we communicate. From confirming appointments to getting quick updates, most of us receive multiple messages throughout the day.

But now, scammers are taking advantage of that convenience.

A new text message scam is circulating, targeting residents across Montana, and it’s designed to look official enough to cause concern. I received one recently.

The message claims to be from the Montana Motor Vehicle Division, specifically referencing a “court division.” It warns recipients that they have an overdue traffic ticket, and that legal action could be taken if payment isn’t made immediately.

Red Flags of a Scam Message

There’s just one problem. It’s not real.

The scam message urges you to click on a suspicious link and even instructs you to reply “YES” to reopen the message and follow additional steps. These are major red flags to watch for. Government agencies, including the Montana MVD, do not send text messages demanding immediate payment or threatening legal action in this way.

What to Do If You Receive This Text

If you receive a message like this, do not click the link and do not respond.

Instead, delete the message and, if you’re concerned, contact the Montana Motor Vehicle Division directly through their official website or phone number to verify any claims.

I may not be the best driver, but I know whether I’ve gotten a ticket.

Scam texts like these are becoming more common, and they rely on fear and urgency to trick people into giving away personal or financial information.

The bottom line: if something feels off, it probably is. Always double-check before taking action, and when in doubt, go straight to the source.
