
Record-Warm November Coming? Montana’s Top Cold Novembers Ranked
Montana has had the luxury of a mild fall so far. There has been a taste of what’s coming this winter, but it hasn’t been bad. I use golfers as a barometer of the weather. When golf season is over, it is time to get ready for winter. As of mid-November, there are still many courses still open.
Even though we have had a mild November, we are expecting a big winter. Many forecasts for Montana are calling for a La Niña weather pattern. We are expecting below-normal temperatures and above-normal precipitation.

Montana doesn’t always have mild Novembers, so, if you are new to the state, don’t expect this to be the norm.
According to the National Centers for Environmental Information–which has tracked weather patterns since 1895–Montana has had some very cold Novembers.
Our coldest November was in 1896, when the state’s average temperature was 12.9°F. Growing up in Montana, I have had the privilege of experiencing only four of the top ten coldest Novembers on record.

The most recent November that made the top-ten list of coldest Novembers was in 2000, with an average temperature of 22.1°F.
Looking Ahead: Will November 2025 Make the Record Books?
It will be interesting to see where November, 2025 lands on the list of the warmest Novembers on record. So far it looks like we will be towards the top of the warmest November list.
