Fall in Montana is a special time of year, and it may mean different things to different people.
If you are a person who thinks that fall doesn’t officially start until the Autumnal Equinox, this year that will be taking place on September 22. For others, fall is more of a frame of mind and starts earlier than that.
There are a few things that we know we can count on when it comes to fall in Montana.
Montana’s Hunting Season Traditions
Hunting– The camo and the hunter-orange clothing will be seen around more than usual. You don’t just see camo out in the woods. You will see the clothing in restaurants, gas stations, and at work. If you are lucky you may see someone wearing camo with flip-flops. Which brings us the next thing you can count on in the fall in Montana.
Unpredictable Montana Fall Weather
Weather–Like spring in Montana, the weather in the fall is very unpredictable. It can go from almost triple digits one day to morning frost a few days later. There can be rain one day and snow the next day, sometimes both on the same day.
Football Season– Football is big in Montana. Not only will the high school stadiums be filled on those Friday nights, but Saturdays are a busy time for college football. When the Bobcats and the Griz play at home, there can be almost 45,000 people at those two games.
Wildlife–Some of Montana’s wildlife is gearing up for the long winter. They are eating and fattening up for the lean time of the year. There will be more human encounters with grizzlies and black bears in the fall.

Natural Beauty– Montana's beauty intensifies in the fall. Just when you think it can’t get any more spectacular, just take a drive around the state and you will marvel at the colors and the beauty of our state.
