Free Mountain Bike Rentals for Kids Returns to Missoula This Summer
Embracing the Outdoors: Springtime in Western Montana
As we head into spring and start thinking about summer in Western Montana, it’s that time of year when kids are ready to get outside, hit the trails, and trade screen time for trail time.
But not every family has the ability to buy a mountain bike, especially as kids grow so quickly. That’s where the Missoula Mountain Bike Coalition is stepping in again this year with something that has become a real resource for local families.
The Youth Mountain Bike Library: A Resource for All
They’re launching Season 3 of the Youth Mountain Bike Library, a program that provides free mountain bikes for kids who want to ride the trails all summer long. It’s a simple idea with a big impact. Kids borrow a properly sized mountain bike from April through September, along with a helmet they get to keep and a lock to use during the season.

According to the Missoula Mountain Bike Coalition, the program is about more than just getting kids on bikes. It’s also about helping families bridge the gap during those fast-growing years when buying a new bike every season just is not realistic. The goal is to keep kids riding safely, consistently, and confidently without putting extra strain on household budgets.
So far this year, 22 families have already signed up, including several returning families who are now upgrading to larger bike sizes as their kids grow.
Meeting Demand: The Need for Larger Youth Bikes
Executive Director Caroline Whelan says one of the biggest ongoing needs is for larger youth bikes. She noted that kids in the roughly 4’9” to 5’ range have been the most difficult size group to keep in stock, and that remains the biggest gap they are trying to fill right now.

The coalition is also still accepting donations of bikes and funding to help meet growing demand heading into the 2026 season.
At its core, the Youth Mountain Bike Library is about access. It gives more kids in Missoula and Western Montana a chance to experience the trails, build skills, and connect with the outdoors in a place where that kind of access really matters.
As we roll into another Montana summer, the message is pretty simple. Get the kids outside, get them moving, and if there’s a bike available, get them on the trail.
