Everyone is keeping an eye on the weather these days. After all, in mid-February it can be unpredictable. Over the past week alone we have seen snow, sunshine, and temperatures reach double digits below zero. It is even more important to keep an eye on the weather because this is the time of year that brave souls jump into frigid water across Montana for a good cause.

Missoula's Griz Dip Saturday February 22, 2025

The Montana Special Olympics have been holding their annual Polar Plunges across the state, and now it is Missoula's turn with the annual Griz Dip coming up on Saturday, February 22, at the Missoula Fairgrounds.

Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. with the plunging beginning at noon. When I say it is frigid water, that is no exaggeration. Every year, there is an opportunity for spectators to purchase bags of ice to throw into the water. All of it in good fun.

Polar Plunges Are Needed in Montana

Polar Plunges are a way for the Special Olympics to raise money for the athletes to be able to attend games in Montana. With the size of Montana and the amount of travel these athletes do to compete, fundraisers like this are needed. If you would like to take the plunge or donate to the cause you can do so at SOMT.org. By the way the forecast for Saturday the 22nd is partly cloudy and 44 degrees. Great for jumping.

This event is also part of the Law Enforcement Torch Run which raises funds for the Special Olympic athletes. Don't be surprised to see members of the Missoula Police Department or the Missoula County Sheriff's Department getting involved with this event too.

One of the highlights of these events for me is to hear the athletes say the Special Olympic oath "Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt."
