If you have lived in Missoula for any amount of time, you have probably noticed the number of concerts in the area has grown over the years.

Why Weather Awareness Is Essential at Montana Concerts

Since we live in a state with unpredictable weather, concertgoers have to be prepared for all types of climates.

I have been working behind the scenes at Missoula concerts for decades and most recently, we had to evacuate a venue due to lightning strikes. We did not want lightning to strike the stage equipment powered by thousands of watts of electricity and harm patrons. I was part of the large team to get people safely outside and to shelter. We made sure the lighting was far enough away before letting people back in. I got the chance to talk to some of the patrons and was pleasantly surprised by their positive attitudes and patience. Some people were dancing and singing in the rain, while others took shelter in the nearby gym and in shuttle buses.

It was not a long wait before we allowed people to return, and the show went on until midnight to make up for the lost time.

Being prepared is key to a positive concert experience and I have some tips for you:

How to Stay Safe and Still Have Fun

Wear Layers – Being cold is not fun.

Stay Hydrated – Bring a reusable water bottle if allowed or buy water early before lines get long.

Wear Comfortable Shoes – You may be standing or walking a lot more than expected, especially if there are long entry lines or parking is far away.

Bring a Portable Phone Charger – A dead phone means no photos, no ride-share apps, and no emergency contact.

Save the Venue Map to Your Phone – Know where exits, restrooms, first aid stations, and shelter areas are located.

Set a Meetup Spot – Cell service can get spotty at big events. Designate a place to regroup if you get separated from your group.

Know the Bag Policy – Most venues have strict clear-bag rules. Avoid delays by checking what’s allowed before you arrive.

Be Weather-Wise – In addition to lightning, plan for sun or rain: bring sunscreen, a hat, or a poncho depending on the forecast.

Keep Your ID & Tickets Handy – Have them easily accessible (but secure) to show security or the gate.

Check Social Media or Venue Alerts – Sometimes updates or emergencies are posted there faster than anywhere else.

As I walked around scanning the crowd after we let everyone back in, I saw families dancing, couples embracing and just a general sense that everyone was really enjoying themselves. That is the whole point of it. Listening to live music with friends and family, making memories, while staying safe.
