The Most Magical Christmas Town is Just a Short Drive from Montana
Usually, I'm the one who insists that Thanksgiving gets the attention it deserves and that holiday decorations for Christmas should come after the day that Americans feast. But Halloween decorations started showing up in July this year, so it almost feels like Christmas is late, and it's only the first week of November.
If you're feeling the holiday itch like I am, you may want to plan a trip to a nearby Christmassy town. Of course, Montana has some great Christmassy towns that are worth visiting. Here are 8 you might want to check out.

But if you want to visit a Christmas town that's known far and wide for its colorful cheer, you'll want to head across the border to Washington.
Have You Ever Been to Leavenworth, Washington?
Leavenworth is a Bavarian-themed town that is delightful year-round, but is especially fun during the holidays. Even if you visit during the warmer months there's great German food and beer and wine. But the main draw is what they call "Christmastown."
This is when Leavenworth is covered in lights ("over half a million" according to the Leavenworth website) and people can visit the town for free and take in all the holiday splendor. Just a sample of the things to see an do while you're there:
- Listen to carolers and other musicians performing in the gazebo
- See the gingerbread house exhibition
- Kids crafts
- Take your picture with Santa and Mrs. Claus
There are also gift shops and plenty of hot chocolate if you just want to stroll the streets. If you plan to stay in the area, there are hotels, bed and breakfasts, camping, and vacation rentals, but keep in mind these fill up way in advance. You may have a chance to find a room in January or February--they say this can be a great time to visit with fewer crowds and the lights will still be up!
If you can't make it to Leavenworth this holiday season, you can still feel like you're there. They have live webcams and winter videos to help you feel the magic.
