There have also been some pretty big movies that have been filmed in Montana. Most everyone knows about "A River Runs Through It" being filmed in Montana. Another big movie that had a bit of it filmed in Montana was "Forrest Gump" starring Tom Hanks. Part of the running sequence with the main character was filmed in Montana. When the film was being made in the early 1990s there wasn't a lot of news about a major motion picture, starring Tom Hanks, being filmed in the state at the time. Now we may know why.

Tom Hanks recently appeared on 'The Late Show With Stephen Colbert' and told a story about that part of the film. He explained how the movie studio didn't want to pay for that part of the movie. Director Robert Zemeckis met with Hanks and asked him to help him fund those scenes out of their pockets and take a cut of the profits instead.

Tom Hank's Brother Jim Played 'Forrest Gump' for Some Scenes

He also explained that they filmed a lot of the running sequences used a smaller crew for filming in remote areas. Some of the scenes were not even with Tom Hanks himself, they were his brother, Jim. So there is a good chance that, even though parts of "Forrest Gump" were filmed in Montana, Tom Hanks may not have been a part of it at all.
