7 Sure Signs It’s Spring in Montana
Spring in Montana is a season of change. When we start coming out of the long Montana winter there are a few things that are almost guaranteed when it comes to spring in Montana. Here are 7 sure signs it is spring in Montana.
Snow Tires- For me, because I drive a mini-van and live up a hill, it is always a debate when to get my snow tires off. I travel the state a lot in the spring for youth sports. There are passes that will inevitably see snow in the spring, and being safe for me is a priority. Since the valleys don't get much snow, the debate in my head continues.
The Weather- Everyone in Montana talks about the weather all year round, but it seems like weather in the spring is discussed way more than any other time of year. It's because of the unpredictability. We can have snow in the morning and sunny and 70 in the afternoon.
Outdoor Sports- This is the time of the year when sport worlds can collide. Due to the weather, you can ski or snowboard in the morning and then go and play a round of golf in the afternoon. It isn't unusual to see a car with skis on the top and a set of golf clubs in the back.
The Wildlife- Montana wildlife comes alive. This year Montana has seen an early awakening of bears from hibernation. Springtime in Montana will see the arrival of birds. Among the robins, blue birds, and Western Meadowlarks we will also see four other species of birds that will make their way towards Eastern Montana. Skunks and foxes are out too. Be aware when driving around Montana you will see these furry critters on the roads. Trust me you don't want to hit any of these animals, especially the skunk.
Road Construction- The warming weather will mean that our roads will get the makeover they desperately need. That means the "unofficial flower of Montana", the traffic cone will be making an appearance.
Clothing Layers- You can start your morning with a winter jacket and be comfortable. By the afternoon you could be wearing a t-shirt and shorts. Spring is also the season where you may see the first arrival of toes. Sandals, flip-flops, and footwear without socks make their appearance.
It's All A Lie- Some people are convinced that spring doesn't exist in Montana. With the unpredictability of everything, they believe spring doesn't start until June, 20th, which will be the first official day of summer in Montana.
Spring in Montana is My Second Favorite Season
My favorite season in Montana is the fall. But coming in a close second would be spring. I appreciate the unpredictability of the season. I like to watch the weather change, the flowers eventually come out, and the animals make their appearance. I also can't wait for my toes to finally make an appearance too.
