Rare Blue Moon Will Cap Off a Stunning Month in Montana Skies
There’s something special about seeing celestial events in the Montana skies, and we’ve got a really nice stretch lining up for us. The weather is looking pretty cooperative, which is always half the battle around here when it comes to actually seeing anything.
Full Moons Galore: Double the Delight
Montana is going to get a beautiful view of a full moon to kick off the month on May 1, and that alone is always worth taking a few minutes to step outside and look up. But May doesn’t stop there.
A Rare Treat: The Blue Moon Phenomenon
This is where it gets a little more unique. We’re actually going to get two full moons in the same month, according to EarthSky. The second one arrives on May 31, and that officially makes it a Blue Moon. It’s not something that happens all the time, so if you’re into skywatching even a little bit, this is one to keep on your radar.

On top of that, May will also see the peak of the Eta Aquariids meteor showers, which will peak May 5-6 with the moon 84% full, according to the American Meteor Society. So, if you get away from the city lights, you might catch a few shooting stars mixed in with everything else going on overhead.
Of course, this is Montana, so it all comes down to cloud cover like it always does. The skies are looking clear for tonight’s “Full Flower Moon”, but we will have to see what the weather has in store for us for the second full moon at the end of the month.
