Scammers are at it again, and this time they’re pretending to be Amazon. If you get a text saying there’s a problem with something you bought, and you’re offered a refund through a link, you are advised not to proceed. It’s a scam.

How the Scam Message Works

Here’s how it works: You get an unexpected text that looks legit, saying Amazon did a “routine quality inspection” and found that something you ordered doesn’t meet standards or was recalled. The message offers a full refund and even says you can keep the item; all you have to do is click the link to get your money back.

Sounds nice, right? Wrong. That link doesn’t lead to Amazon. It’s a phishing trap designed to steal your personal info, your money, or both.

How to Recognize Phishing Links in Texts

To protect yourself:

  • Don’t click the link: Don’t reply to the text either. If you think it might be real, go directly to Amazon’s website or app and check your account for alerts.
  • Use trusted contact info: Call or email using details you know are legit, not the ones from the suspicious text.
  • Report it: Forward the text to 7726 (SPAM) or use your phone’s “report junk” option, then delete it.

Scammers are banking on the fact that so many of us shop on Amazon that their fake alerts will catch someone off guard. The scammers are likely trying to get money or personal data. Don’t let it be you.

If you ever get a weird text, double-check directly with the company, and report anything suspicious to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

The bottom line? If it sounds too good to be true, like a refund without a return, it’s probably a scam. Stay sharp, Missoula.
