Apple has recently sent out the iOS 18.1 update which offers AI features on compatible devices, significantly increasing the potential for use of AI in daily life by many consumers.

Like any new technology, it may take a while for any kinks to be worked out, and that's been the case with AI too. ChatGPT, for example, has a message at the bottom of its query page:

ChatGPT can make mistakes. Check important info.

While we appreciate the disclaimer, it has been pretty amusing to ask AI about Montana. So far, we've asked ChatGPT about several things and AI didn't quite get it right.

The Beagle Airbnb

We asked once about places to explore or visit in western Montana and it suggested the biggest beagle in the world...which is actually in Idaho.

The Best Burger in Missoula

We've asked about the best burger in Missoula and it suggested Notorious P.I.G. which is awesome...but doesn't have burgers on the menu.

How to Make a Steak

We asked AI how to make a steak and it didn't do too poorly. But we did compare it with how a Montanan would cook a steak and how Gordon Ramsay would cook a steak, and let's just say the AI came in third.

AI Is Learning...But How Fast?

When we first asked about the best burger in Missoula it was in 2023 and the response started with "As an AI language model, I do not have personal taste preferences...".

But when I asked again just now ChatGPT not only gave four options, but the options were all solid (Wally and Buck's, Missoula Club, James Bar, Conflux). There was also a map showing where each one was and it included a list of sources, which for the most part were relevant and reliable.

But think about the assumptions that people from other parts of the U.S. have about Montana--we all ride horses, everyone lives on a ranch, we still use outhouses--you know, the usual stereotypes.

I asked AI, "What is a Montanan's primary mode of transportation?" and there was no mention of horses, but it did say it depends on where you live in Montana.

Maybe AI is learning faster than we thought.
