For generations in Missoula, the Western Montana Fair was the unofficial "last blast of summer." It was the place where friends reunited before school started, families packed the midway, and the calendar still said mid-August.

Exciting Changes on the Horizon

But this year, fairgoers are going to notice some major changes.

Introducing the New Two-Weekend Format

The 2026 fair is arriving earlier than many longtime locals remember, and it will unfold over two separate weekends packed with different themes and attractions.

The new format kicks off Friday, July 31 with “Machine vs. Muscle,” a split-style celebration designed to highlight two very different sides of Montana culture. The first weekend focuses on machines and motorsports, featuring events like Lords of Dirt, a car show, and more.

After a short pause on Monday, August 3, the fair returns with the “Muscle” portion of the event, bringing rodeo action, livestock shows, animal events, carnival rides, food vendors, and arena entertainment.

In total, the fair will now feature eight days of events spread across two weekends at the Missoula County Fairgrounds.

One thing that is staying the same is free admission to the fairgrounds. Guests will still be able to enter the fair without paying admission, although select arena shows and special events will require tickets. Tickets for the events will be on sale soon.

A Shift in Tradition for Missoula Residents

For many longtime Missoula residents, the timing change may feel especially noticeable. Historically, the fair was often held closer to the start of the school year in mid-to-late August, serving as one final gathering before summer officially ended. Moving the event into late July marks a significant shift from tradition.

Whether you’re going for rodeo action, carnival food, motorsports, or simply the nostalgia, the Western Montana Fair is definitely looking different this year.
