We were just talking the other day about how nice it felt to finally get one of those perfect May days, sunny skies and 75-degree temperatures. In Montana, those do not come around as often as we would like, or at least it feels that way. 

A Transitional Month: Spring to Summer

But that’s kind of the magic of May in Montana. It’s that in-between month where you start to get a real taste of summer while still holding on to spring. You are not usually dealing with the extremes just yet. Instead, you get a little bit of everything: warmer afternoons, cooler mornings, and signs of life popping up everywhere as plants begin to bloom. 

Looking Forward: Anticipating Summer Adventures

It is also the time of year when people really start looking ahead to summer.

Now, while May is known for that balance, there have been years where things have leaned much warmer. Records from NOAA, which date back to 1895, show that some of Montana’s warmest May temperatures tend to show up later in the month. But when you average everything out, you still land right in that classic middle ground feel. 

Personal Experiences: Warm Days in Montana

I have experienced four out of the top ten warmest Mays on record in Montana, but only two of the coldest Mays on record.
