For most people, getting the chance to interview someone famous is already a pretty big deal. But it becomes even more special when that person is someone you actually knew while growing up. That recently happened to me when I had the chance to catch up with Scott Michael Campbell.

From Missoula to Hollywood: Scott’s Inspiring Journey

Born and raised in Missoula, Scott attended school here before eventually heading off to build an impressive career in Hollywood as an actor, writer, and producer. Over the years, he has appeared alongside some truly legendary names, including Robin Williams, Heath Ledger, Bruce Willis, and Bill Murray, among many others.

Nostalgia and Connections: A Shared History

I have been name-dropping Campbell for years. We attended middle school and high school together, and I’ve followed his career closely ever since.

Campbell recently returned to Montana for a very special reason: his wedding. While he was back home, we had a chance to chat over the phone about his career and his love of Montana.

No matter where life and Hollywood have taken him, Campbell said Montana has always remained close to his heart. He talked about how special it is whenever he gets the opportunity to come back home, reconnect with family and friends, and spend time in the place where he grew up.

Steinbeck's Love Letter: Why Montana Stands Out

Campbell has used the famous John Steinbeck quote about Montana when talking about his home state with other people.

I am in love with Montana. For other states, I have admiration, respect, recognition, even some affection, but with Montana, it is love, and it’s difficult to analyze love when you’re in it. - John Steinbeck

With friends and loved ones gathering in Montana for the wedding, it also gave him the chance to share the beauty of Big Sky Country with people from different parts of his life.

Hollywood Moments: The Awe of Sharing Space with Legends

I asked Campbell if there was ever a moment when he stepped back in awe of the fact that he’s just a guy from Montana sharing a room with some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. He relayed a story about working with Robert Downey Jr., who mentioned his role in the 1980s film ‘Less Than Zero.’ Campbell said he was amazed to be discussing a movie he had watched so many times.

Another more recent incident was when he was working on set with Pete Davidson and Bill Murray. Campbell initially thought he would be working with Dustin Hoffman, but he ended up on set with Bill Murray.

That was probably one of the craziest ones because we all grew up watching Stripes and Caddyshack and SNL, I mean, the list goes on and on. You're just kind of sitting there and he was so, he was so cool. He was just so chill, and you're kind of going, I've watched every one of your movies like 1000 times. He's one of the greatest comedic geniuses ever.

More than anything, though, Campbell spoke proudly about the people of Montana and what it means to be a Montanan. It was a fun conversation and a reminder that no matter how far someone travels, home can still play a huge role in who they are.

Congratulations to Campbell and his bride, and hopefully we’ll get another chance to catch up down the road. In the meantime, you can catch him on an episode of the latest season of Ted, and he will be starring in an independent film called I’ve Got You’.
