The Dennis Washington Montana Heritage Center, in Helena, has recently opened to the public at a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Governor Greg Gianforte, Dennis Washington, and more on hand for the festivities.

The center is going to be the home of the Montana Historical Society, which will be “a space to tell the stories of Montana and all our people.”

A New Home for Montana’s Stories

Not only will the Heritage Center look back on the stories and the people who have helped shape Montana from the beginning, but there are stories included that are still being written today.

Missoula’s Quinn Wolferman in the Spotlight

One local Montanan whose story is included in the Heritage Center is professional skier Quinn Wolferman from Missoula. I had the opportunity to speak with him about his involvement with the center and what he is up to these days.

Wolferman was honored to be asked to be a part of the center and was filmed skiing at Lost Trail Powder Mountain before Christmas in 2024. That footage is now part of the Heritage Center. He attended the ribbon cutting event and was able to meet some of the amazing people involved with creating the center and included in the displays, like Norma Ashby Smith, who is considered “Montana’s First Lady of Television”.

Wolferman, who is an X-Games gold medal winner, is busy continuing to make ski films and is off to Finland this month and Japan in January for filming.

As for upcoming competitions, he has been invited to compete, but competing will depend on his filming schedule and physical condition. Skiing at the level he does take a toll physically.

One thing about the Montana Heritage Center that excited Wolferman is their goal to make sure all Montana children get free admission to the center. The center has a multi-day grand opening celebration planned for June 25-28, 2026.
