We like to shout out places in Montana that are recognized on national lists because, well, it's nice to be recognized. Just last month we had an article about a local sandwich shop that got a shout-out in the New York Post and they were thrilled.

But sometimes, you don't need a list to validate the things about Montana that are awesome, or taste good, or are fun, or beautiful. So I'm going to play the expert on this one.

When it comes to autumn destinations, Montana usually doesn't get mentioned as often as Colorado, or Vermont, but Western Montana has its beautiful spots when the leaves change color.

One of the most beautiful spots to visit in the fall in Montana, in my humble opinion, is the Ninepipes Lodge in Charlo, Montana.

I have an October birthday and so did my grandmother so there were several years when our family stopped by the Lodge to celebrate, and I came to love the way the landscape looked in autumn.

It may not have the diversity of color that other places do, but look at how magnificent the trees are against the crisp blue sky and the backdrop of the Mission Mountains. The view is captured beautifully in the video below.

You could say, it's probably also one of the most bucket list-worthy views of winter when the snow falls on the mountain, and in the spring and summer, you'll see turtles and geese in the pond which is a delight.

But I think the view from the Ninepipes Lodge during autumn is my favorite so if you haven't had the pleasure of dining there, plan a trip and keep reading to find out when peak foliage will be.
