Montana Special Olympics Hosting Volunteer Summit in Missoula This August
There are a lot of organizations that I have been proud to support over my decades-long career in radio. One organization I have been honored to support is the Montana Special Olympics.
I have had the privilege of being involved in not only the Montana state summer games, but our local Missoula summer games, and the annual Polar Plunge – "Griz Dip", that takes place every February.
The strength and courage of the athletes is always amazing to see. Not only that, but the teamwork and support these athletes get is incredible to see. The teamwork isn't just for the athletes. The amount of support they get from coaches, volunteers, and sponsors is something special too.
Putting on Special Olympics events is a big task. The need for volunteers and coaches is constant. This is where you can make a difference.
The Montana Special Olympics are holding a volunteer training summit in Missoula on Monday, August 11, 2025, at the First Interstate Bank, 101 E. Front Street from 5:15 to 8:15 p.m.
This is your chance to learn more about their needs and to get a free meal too. I spoke with Rae Smith, the VP of outreach for the Montana Special Olympics about the event, Smith said:
We're looking for coaches, unified partners, team volunteers, an area management team members, or anyone interested in supporting Special Olympics and our mission and cause.
There will be representatives from multiple departments at the event.
- Sports
- Outreach
- Games Management Specialist
- Development
There are many ways volunteers can help out. There are coaching opportunities for basketball, bocce ball, and track and field. Not all volunteers need to coach, for example, Unified Partners play along with the athletes.
Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt. - Special Olympics Athlete Oath
The Montana state games will be held in Billings next year and then move to Missoula in 2027, where they will be for three years. This is a great time to get involved.

Smith asks for people who are interested to please sign up in advance of the summit so they have an idea of how many people for the free meal. If you would like more information, feel free to call 406-315-4214, or email R.smith@somt.org with any questions.
