According to AARP, more than one in five U.S. residents, which is around 69 million people, currently receive Social Security benefits. In Montana, the program has a major impact on both individuals and the state economy. It provides monthly payments that help cover essential living expenses, including housing, food, and healthcare costs.

Social Security Key Figures:

  • 69 million Americans receive Social Security.
  • 64,000 Montanans are lifted out of poverty each year because of the program.
  • Without Social Security, 37.3% of Montanans age 65 and older would live in poverty; with it, that figure is 9.4%.
  • More than 96,000 Montanans rely on Social Security as their primary source of income.
  • Social Security adds $5.1 billion to Montana’s economy each year.

AARP Montana State Director, Tim Summers said these numbers show why the program is vital for those who rely on it now and for future generations.

Social Security remains a lifeline for thousands of Montanans, helping older residents, people with disabilities, and surviving family members maintain financial stability. As the program marks its 90th year, its role in supporting communities across the Treasure State continues to be as important as ever.
