It doesn't matter if you have a cell phone or a landline, you are bound to have gotten a "robocall" or even hundreds of them by now. Yes, Montana gets quite a few "robocalls" these days. People get so many phone calls that are scams that they refuse to answer the phone. I know quite a few people who are doing this, including myself.
It has become so bad that many recommend not answering calls unless the number is in your contact list or is one you recognize. If they know you and it is important, they can leave a message. The thing about the calls is that they have actually become an epidemic for some people, especially here in Montana. There are steps you can take to cut down the number of calls you get, but for some reason Montanans aren't taking enough steps to avoid these calls.
According to WhisleOut.com there were 53 billion robocalls. In Montana alone we received over 112 million robocalls last year. That’s an average of 100 calls per person, including children.
Montana also ranks towards the bottom of states that are taking steps to avoid these calls, especially when it comes to the Do Not Call Registry. According to the report the most susceptible to phone scams are Millennials. This is because they use phones less frequently than older adults, leaving them less experienced in handling scam calls.
Whisleout.com has some suggestions on how to avoid scam phone call. Don't give out your personal information over the phone. Carefully listen to your voicemails, to avoid scams and slow down. Scammers rely on people acting quickly without stopping to think. Also, as with most things in life, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Only 44% of the country has joined the Do Not Call Registry. If you haven’t registered yet, you can do so here. This puts the choice back to you whether you want receive telemarketing calls or not. In the meantime, be aware that there are many scammers and scams out there trying to get your money.
