I'm starting to feel like I should start a news source for dog news in Montana.

In the last several months there have been multiple stories about owning dogs or living with dogs in Montana. We've covered the costs, the breeds, the requirements, and even what it means if you see a dog wearing a red or yellow bandanna. All of those stories are available below.

But the latest dog news might be the ultimate announcement about dogs in Montana. Thanks to a combination of data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Indeed, World Population Review, and the Animal Legal Defense Fund, we now have a definitive ranking of the best states for dog owners thanks to johnfitch.com, and Montana is one of the best places to own a dog.

What Makes Montana a Great Place to Own a Dog?

This study reviewed for each state:

  • How many people own dogs?
  • How many jobs are for veterinarians?
  • How much do dog walkers make?
  • What kind of animal protection laws are there?

Here's how Montana did:

  • Ownership: 51.9%
  • Veterinarians: .98 out of 1,000 jobs
  • Dog walkers: $17.63/hour
  • Animal Protection Laws: ranked 38 out of 50
  • Overall: #2

It's impressive that Montana ranked second overall in this study, but of course, so much more has to be considered if you want to own a dog. The cost of owning a dog can be expensive, and we found out Montana is in the top 20 for most expensive states. If you live in Missoula, you're also required to have a multi-dog permit if you own more than two dogs.

But if you're wondering if your dog will have playmates, considering more than 50% of Montanans own a dog, there's a pretty good chance they will.
