Montana’s Billionaires See Wealth Surge in 2025 Forbes Ranking

There have been reports that Elon Musk has an opportunity to become the first trillionaire on the planet, according to Reuters. It could happen sooner than people think.

Forbes magazine has released their annual list of the 400 Richest People in America. Elon Musk is the wealthiest person in the country with an estimated worth of $428 billion, almost twice as much as the second richest person, Larry Ellison, who is worth $276 billion, as of this writing. With changes in the stock market, this could change daily.  

According to Forbes, the 400 richest people in the country are worth a record $6.6 trillion, an increase of $1.2 trillion over the last year.  

Three billionaires on the list call Montana home and it looks like each of them has had their wealth increase over the last year. 

Montana’s Billionaires on the Rise

Two of the billionaires who live in Montana have their wealth that comes from the same family. The Cargill family has 12 heirs who are billionaires.

Marianne Liebmann, 72, who is worth $4.8 billion, is on the list tied at 319. Liebmann is one of the heirs to the Cargill family fortune. Liebmann’s wealth increased from $4.6 billion in 2024.  

Austen Cargill II, 74, who is worth $4.8 billion, is also tied at 319 on the list and is another heir to the Cargill family fortune. Cargill’s wealth increased from $4.6 billion in 2024.    

The richest person in Montana on the list has been the richest person in Montana for decades. Dennis Washington, 91, who is worth $7.8 billion and is on the list tied at 181. In 2024 Washington was worth $7.4 billion.  

To be included on the list this year, a person must be worth at least $3.8 billion.
