What AI Thinks a Montana Politician’s Platform Should Be
It's an election year and things just got very weird.
Wire Magazine published a story about an AI candidate running for Parliament in the UK. Even though the AI is represented by a person, the AI will make decisions.
There are probably more than a few jokes about the fitness or efficacy of human politicians and the options to replace them with computers/robots/AI. I'll let you fill in the blanks.
But that does make me wonder, what would AI think of Montana politics? Would it understand the complexity of issues in our state? Would it come up with realistic solutions? Could an AI politician in Montana even get elected?
We asked ChatGPT, "As a Montana politician, describe what issues or initiatives would be most important to your platform and the position you would take."

AI is known for making mistakes, but this didn't seem too far from what you might hear from a real Montana politician. There was mention of "values" and "needs" and it laid out nine priorities:
- Economic Development and Job Creation
- Agriculture and Rural Development
- Environmental Stewardship and Public Lands
- Healthcare Access and Affordability
- Education and Workforce Development
- Infrastructure and Transportation
- Public Safety and Community Well-being
- Indigenous Rights and Relations
- Fiscal Responsibility and Tax Policy
The AI also said this platform "aims to create a prosperous, sustainable, and inclusive future for all Montanans.
While there was more detail under each of the nine priorities nothing was very specific. Yet all of the priorities seemed relevant, if not important to Montana.
AI has successfully passed the bar exam, do you think it could successfully legislate too?
